interact: the nervous system of mikrogalleriet

in connection with the exhibit “49cm”, mikrogalleriet developed an open tracking system which is now a permanent part of the gallery’s resources. we invite visiting artists and fellow makers to use and develop the system.

the system is based on a overhead CCTV mounted on the gallery 5m above street level, a video grabber card and a processing sketch developed by jonas jongejan and jacob sikker remin of 8bit klubben. the software tracks any motion on the street and the position data of bypassers are transmitted over the gallery WIFI as OSC data for use in the installations and performances in the gallery space.

the software can be downloaded here. please feel free to use and develop.

below is the curators statement for “49cm”:

the distance between the street and mikrogalleriet is measured to be 49cm. the thickness of the wall, that separates us. “49cm” is an exploration of the division, of perception, reaction, and re-evaluation.

by facilitating a digital nervous system for the artists and art works to tap into, we hope to see works that relate to their surroundings consciously and critically. machines that challenge their own context and make us reconsider our own.

mikrogalleriet invites all people and machines to take part in the process, the data, and to evolve the interface together.
