5-7/12: “interference” solo exhibition with carlos katastrofsky

in  physics the concept of interference applies to when two or more harmonic electronic signals or waves of light or sound, overlap and a new wave emerges on a different frequency. the title of this exhibition series describes the interaction between curator and artist, our communication across long distance, and between the three galleries involved: between off and online, the transformation and movement of the immaterial between the virtual sphere and physical space and our public discussion forum on the internet. we could also use the term interference to describe the frequencies created in the encounter between the public and the art.

the austrian media artist carlos katastrofsky describes his online artworks as harmonies based on the interference of the cultural waves in the online world, e.g. the development in file sharing, the copyright debate, surveillance and pornography.      

carlos katastrofsky works effortlessly with the internet and with his minimalistic detournements he sharpens our vision of the netbased existance we take as a given in our everyday life.

his art also examines the politics of internet-based art production. on the internet, the role of the artist and - equally important in the game of art - that of the curator, are redefined. an important agenda of this exhibition series is to establish net art as a natural component of contemporary art. the navigation points for all contemporary art is the concept, the participation, the relation, communication and last but not least reflection on the world we live in. the internet is also an artspace.

this is the first solo exhibition for netart at the internet based gallery netfilmmakers – and we use this opportunity alongside carlos katastrofsky to experiment with different forms of communication and exhibiting methods. we also open two exhibitions of carlos’ works simultaneously– one at spanien 19c in århus and the other at mikrogalleriet cph - where the immaterial art of the net is transformed to suit the physical exhibition space.

in this exhibition series carlos´ works from 2003-2007 are presented, as well as three new pieces that have been especially created for interference.

carlos katastrofsky will be present at the openings – and it will also be possible to meet him at the artist talk in spanien 19c in århus and at the performance “on translation” in mikrogalleriet cph.
